Pakistan Cricket Hits Rock Bottom, Team Slips To Its Lowest-Ever ICC Ranking

Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman could be nearing its end, with his current two-year term set to expire in April 2027. Despite having a provision that allows him to continue, reports suggest that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman may struggle to secure enough support from other ACC members for an extension.

According to a news agency, Mohsin Naqvi is unlikely to receive the backing needed for another term. While it remains unclear what position the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take, the strained relationship between India and Pakistan makes it difficult to see India supporting his continuation.

Mohsin Naqvi has faced strong criticism in India, particularly over his statements about the country following the Pahalgam ter*or att@ck. The tension became highly visible during the 2025 men’s Asia Cup, when the Indian team decided not to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The situation ended with Mohsin Naqvi leaving the Dubai International Cricket Stadium carrying the trophy.

A similar situation unfolded on Sunday during the women’s Asia Cup final. India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs but the Indian players did not attend the presentation ceremony while Mohsin Naqvi was waiting to hand over the trophy.

The ACC presidency rotates between its full-member boards — India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The president normally serves a two-year term, with the appointment decided at the ACC Annual General Meeting (AGM). This system means the same country does not automatically hold the presidency for consecutive terms.

An ACC president can remain in office beyond the initial two years but there are specific conditions. Another member board must formally propose an extension at the AGM and all full members must unanimously approve it. Each extension lasts for one additional year rather than restarting the president’s original two-year term.

The total length of a president’s tenure can therefore vary. India’s Jay Shah served as ACC president from 30 January 2021 to 6 December 2024, spending almost four years in the position. His tenure included his original two-year term and two one-year extensions. Like Mohsin Naqvi, Jay Shah also held another important cricket administration role during his ACC presidency. He was the BCCI secretary at the time. After Jay Shah left the position, Sri Lanka’s Shammi Silva served as interim ACC president before Mohsin Naqvi was elected for a fresh two-year term beginning in April 2025.

With Mohsin Naqvi’s current term scheduled to end in April 2027, the coming months could determine whether he remains at the head of Asian cricket’s governing body or makes way for another member board.
