There was a time when a Govinda song meant packed cinema halls, nonstop whistles and dance steps copied across the country. In the 1990s, Govinda wasn’t just a film star, he was a phenomenon. With his comic timing, colourful outfits and effortless dance moves, he ruled Hindi cinema and defined an era.

But today, the headlines around him tell a different story. Instead of box office triumphs, there are conversations about missed professional opportunities and constant rumours about tensions in his marriage with Sunita Ahuja.
Amid all this, his nephew Vinay Anand has spoken about the man he still deeply admires. Speaking on a podcast, Vinay Anand described how Govinda’s stardom inspired not just him but an entire generation. According to Vinay, when Govinda reached the top, actors across the industry began following his style, especially his dancing. Even people who were not known for dancing started trying because of his influence.
For Vinay, the admiration is personal as well as professional. He recalled an emotional family memory from his grandmother’s birthday. At the height of his fame, Govinda visited home, performed a traditional gesture of respect by washing her feet in a ceremonial plate and even drank the water as part of the ritual. For Vinay, that moment showed that despite being a superstar, Govinda remained grounded and deeply connected to his roots.
However, Vinay also admitted feeling concerned about some of his uncle’s professional choices. He shared that he had brought several film and event offers to Govinda over the years but many were declined. While this sometimes troubled him, he said Govinda always had his own reasons.
With a 14-year age gap between them, Vinay sees Govinda as more of a father figure than just an uncle. Out of respect, he has never questioned his decisions. Even after acting in around 70 films himself and gaining fame in a regional industry, Vinay says he remains the same respectful nephew in front of Govinda.
The conversation also turned to rumours about Govinda’s personal life, including speculation about an alleged affair and public remarks made by Sunita Ahuja. Vinay said he was initially hesitant to ask about it, not wanting to interfere. Eventually, he did ask Govinda directly and when his uncle denied the rumours, Vinay chose to believe him. Still, he admitted feeling uneasy watching some of Sunita’s interviews, as he had always seen her showing respect toward Govinda.
Through it all, one thing is clear — for Vinay Anand, beyond gossip and changing times, Govinda remains the hero who shaped his life, both as an artist and as a person.
