The IPL is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, attracting millions of fans every season. However, its massive popularity also brings challenges, especially illegal betting. Over the years, authorities across India have kept a close watch on betting syndicates that try to exploit the excitement around matches.
These illegal operations often involve large sums of money, online transactions and organised networks, making them difficult to track. Despite strict laws, such activities continue to surface during the IPL season, prompting frequent police crackdowns.
In the latest case, Odisha Police carried out a major operation on Sunday in Rajgangpur, located in Sundargarh district. Acting on reliable information, a police team raided a suspected location and successfully uncovered an alleged IPL betting racket.
During the raid, five individuals were detained for reportedly running the betting network. According to officials, they were involved in handling bets and collecting money from multiple participants linked to the operation.
The police recovered ₹6 lakh in cash from the spot, indicating the scale of the activity. In addition, funds worth ₹17.61 lakh in a bank account connected to the suspects were frozen as part of the investigation.
Authorities also seized five mobile phones believed to have been used to coordinate and manage the betting transactions. These devices are expected to play a key role in uncovering further details about the network.
A formal case has been registered at the Rajgangpur police station and officials confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
