Govinda, often called “Hero No. 1” of Bollywood, is remembered for his comic timing, effortless dancing, and ability to connect with audiences. Over the years, he worked in some of the most successful films of the 80s and 90s, leaving behind an unforgettable mark on Indian cinema. His career has seen highs, struggles and moments of personal controversy, but his presence in the film industry remains significant. It is in this context that producer Pahlaj Nihalani recently revisited his long professional association with the actor, making it clear that while they collaborated on some of Govinda’s biggest hits, their relationship never turned into friendship.
In a recent conversation, Pahlaj Nihalani recalled Govinda’s early days in the industry, describing how the actor struggled financially and often felt insecure. During the filming of Love 86, Govinda worked alongside Rohan Kapoor, son of legendary singer Mahendra Kapoor. According to Pahlaj Nihalani, Govinda would often compare himself to Rohan who always arrived in a car while Govinda came by auto rickshaw.
The producer advised him to buy his own car and soon after, when actor Vinod Mehra gave Govinda Rs 50,000 for a new project, he bought a Maruti 800. Pahlaj Nihalani fondly remembered how Govinda drove straight from the showroom to his party at the Holiday Inn, giving him and his wife the first ride. Although such family-like gestures existed, Pahlaj Nihalani stressed that there was always a certain distance between them.
The producer went on to speak about the actor’s debut. While Pahlaj Nihalani introduced him, Govinda first worked in his uncle’s film Tan-Badan. The project faced major setbacks when distributors refused to take it, forcing it to shut down temporarily. Govinda never revealed this to Pahlaj Nihalani at the time. However, with the release of Love 86 in 1986, his popularity began to grow rapidly. Together, Pahlaj Nihalani and Govinda later delivered hits like Ilzaam, Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen. Yet, despite the success, Pahlaj Nihalani firmly repeated that friendship was never part of their relationship.
Beyond films, Govinda continues to make headlines, particularly for rumours surrounding his marriage with Sunita Ahuja. Speculations of divorce were recently dismissed when the couple celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi together. Sunita herself addressed the matter, saying that no force could separate them, not even divine or evil powers, as they remained inseparably close.
