Imran Khan Claims Vishal Bharadwaj Did Dishonest Casting In Matru Ki…. For Financial Reasons

The journey of a film is often as dramatic as the story it tells and Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a perfect example of that. Released in 2013, the Hindi political satire directed by Vishal Bhardwaj aimed to say something bold about power, money and the cost of progress. Set in rural Haryana, the film looked at the tension between farmers fighting for their land and corporations pushing industrial growth, all wrapped in dark humour and an offbeat narrative style.

While the idea was ambitious and the cast impressive, the film failed to make an impact at the box office. What many people didn’t know at the time was that Imran Khan wasn’t the original choice for the lead role.

Years later, Imran Khan shed light on how he became part of the project. He explained that casting him as a Haryanvi villager was an unusual and unexpected decision. According to him, the film was initially being prepared with Ajay Devgn in mind and early groundwork had already begun with him attached. However, somewhere along the way, Ajay stepped away from the project, leaving a gap that needed to be filled quickly.

At that point in his career, Imran Khan was riding high after the success of films like Delhi Belly and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. He believes that this success played a bigger role in his casting than his suitability for the character. From his perspective, the decision was driven more by financial considerations than creative ones. Having a bankable name helped secure a certain budget, and that worked in his favour. As an actor, he felt both thrilled and intimidated when a filmmaker like Vishal Bhardwaj approached him and he was eager to give his best despite knowing the role would be challenging.

Imran Khan also reflected on how casting often works in the industry, pointing out that choices are frequently influenced by how much money a particular actor can bring in rather than how well they fit the part. He felt that this reality ultimately shaped his experience on the film. Over time, he sensed that the director himself may not have been fully convinced about the casting decision. This uncertainty showed on set, where Imran Khan felt a lack of connection and guidance. Communication was minimal and he was largely left on his own to figure things out. For him, it became the loneliest film he had ever worked on.

When asked about creative freedom, Imran Khan shared that while directors have the power to bring out strong performances even from weaker actors, he didn’t feel that effort here. He noticed that the film’s visual language seemed to work around him rather than with him, using fewer close-ups and keeping him in group or distant shots. In his view, if there was hesitation about casting him, it would have been better not to do so at all.

Despite these behind-the-scenes struggles, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola stood out for its bold ideas and memorable performances by Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi. Although audiences were divided when it released, the film has since gained appreciation as a daring attempt at political satire in mainstream Hindi cinema.
