A viral social media video has triggered fresh debate around women’s safety in India, with actor Bhumi Pednekar strongly condemning the behaviour shown in the clip. The video allegedly showed a few men making obscene gestures toward a woman’s wall painting near a swimming pool, sparking outrage online.
The clip was originally posted by the Instagram account Tube Indian and later reshared by Bhumi on her Instagram Stories. Reacting to the incident, the actor expressed concern over what she described as the dangerous mindset reflected in the behaviour of some young people.
Sharing the viral clip, Bhumi Pednekar wrote, “This is the mentality of our youth. These are the same people who are going to s*xually assault children and women. We are in a pandemic. Just words and showing shame isn’t enough. Stricter laws, stricter laws, stricter laws.”
Her comments come during a period when conversations around women’s safety, harassment and abuse are once again dominating public discussion. In recent weeks, several alleged cases involving dowry harassment and mental torture have shocked people across the country.
This is not the first time Bhumi Pednekar has publicly spoken out against crimes involving women and children. Earlier in January, she had reacted to reports about a six years old girl in Delhi allegedly being gang-raped by three boys aged 10, 13 and 14.
At that time, Bhumi had raised questions about the environment children are growing up in and society’s response to such incidents.
The actor said, “Breaks my heart to see under age boys go through with something so heinous. Imagine the environments they are growing up in. We are punishing the voiceless in our country, and have sensationalised, dogs being a threat.”
The discussion around women’s independence and safety has also been raised recently by actors Kangana Ranaut and Ridhi Dogra, who have spoken about social pressures and personal freedom.
On the work front, Bhumi Pednekar was last seen in Prime Video’s Daldal. Directed by Amrit Raj Gupta, the series is based on Vish Dhamija’s bestselling book Bhendi Bazaar. Bhumi played DCP Rita Ferreria, a police officer investigating a serial k*ller case. Released on January 30, the show also featured Samara Tijori, Aditya Rawal, Geeta Agrawal, Chinmay Mandlekar, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, Rahul Bhat, Sandeep Kulkarni, Shivraj Walvekar, Sandesh Kulkarni and Jaya Bhattacharya.
