There is one Indian actress who delivered blockbuster hits with Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, but shocked fans by quitting films at the height of her success. Well, we are talking about Asin, the girl who has worked in many movies of different languages and in this article we will tell you how Bollywood’s former superstar found love, family and a completely different life beyond the spotlight.
Asin Thottumkal was once among the most successful actresses in Indian cinema, ruling both South Indian films and Bollywood with back-to-back hits. At a time when crossing ₹100 crore at the box office was considered a massive achievement, she became one of the few actresses associated with some of the industry’s biggest commercial successes. But just when her career seemed untouchable, Asin made a surprising decision that left fans stunned, she walked away from films entirely.
Born in October 1985, Asin began acting at a very young age and quickly built a strong presence across multiple film industries. She worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films, earning recognition for her versatility and screen presence. Her acting journey started in 2001 when she was only 15 years old. She made her debut with the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka, directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. While the film gave her a modest start, it opened the doors to a successful career that soon made her one of the most sought-after actresses in South Indian cinema.
After establishing herself in the South, Asin made a major entry into Bollywood in 2008 with Ghajini, opposite Aamir Khan. The psychological action thriller turned out to be a historic success and changed her career overnight. Ghajini became the first Bollywood film to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the domestic box office, creating a new benchmark for the industry. Asin’s performance was widely appreciated and the film instantly pushed her into Bollywood’s top league.
Following the success of Ghajini, she continued her winning streak with several commercially successful films. She starred opposite Salman Khan in Ready, appeared alongside Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan in Bol Bachchan, and worked with Akshay Kumar in Khiladi 786. Her ability to fit comfortably into comedy, romance and commercial entertainers made her one of the most dependable actresses of that era.
Despite her successful run, Asin eventually disappeared from the big screen. Her final film was All Is Well, after which she quietly stepped away from acting. Unlike many celebrities who gradually reduce work, Asin chose to leave the industry completely while still being one of its popular faces.
In 2016, she decided to focus on her personal life and married Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax. Their wedding took place at the luxury Dusit Devarana hotel in Delhi and was attended by close family and friends. After marriage, Asin chose a more private lifestyle, staying away from films and public attention. The couple welcomed their daughter, Arin, in October 2017. Over the years, Rahul Sharma has built a highly successful business career and his net worth has often been reported to be around ₹1,300 crore.
Interestingly, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar played a major role in bringing Asin and Rahul together. During an appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Rahul Sharma shared the story of how they first met. According to him, the meeting happened in 2012 during the Asia Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where Micromax was one of the sponsors. Akshay Kumar’s film Housefull 2 was about to release at the time and Asin was part of the cast promoting the movie.
Rahul Sharma jokingly called Dhaka “the most romantic place on Earth” because that is where he first met his future wife. He recalled that Akshay had described Asin as a simple, grounded and highly professional person who focused only on her work. Akshay also reportedly believed that Rahul and Asin shared similar values and backgrounds, which made them compatible.
Rahul Sharma further revealed that Akshay exchanged their phone numbers because he felt they had a lot in common. Their bond gradually grew stronger, eventually leading to marriage.

Akshay Kumar himself later confirmed that he had secretly played cupid in their love story. In 2016, the actor revealed that he and actress Jacqueline Fernandez had indirectly helped the couple connect during the shooting of Housefull 2 in Delhi. Akshay humorously shared that while the cast was playing hide-and-seek, he cleverly made Asin and Rahul Sharma hide together inside a cupboard, joking that this was where their love story truly began.
Today, even though Asin is no longer active in films, she continues to remain a memorable name for audiences who still associate her with some of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters.
