Vinod Khanna was one of Hindi cinema’s most admired actors, known for not only his striking screen presence but also his remarkable humility and grace. Rising to stardom in the 1970s, he worked alongside the biggest names of the industry and left behind a legacy of memorable performances, proving himself as both a hero and a versatile character actor. His professionalism and generosity often reflected in real life moments, one of which was seen during the making of the 1977 film Khoon Pasina.

The story of Khoon Pasina is remembered as much for its drama behind the scenes as for its success on screen. Initially, Vinod Khanna was chosen to play the lead role, with Danny Denzongpa as his co-star. At that stage, Amitabh Bachchan was not even considered for the film. However, the project took a surprising turn when producer Prakash Mehra showed interest in it.

One late night, Prakash Mehra called director Rakesh Kumar to discuss the film after hearing the script. Impressed, he agreed to produce it but insisted that Amitabh Bachchan should be cast as the lead instead of Vinod Khanna. This decision not only altered the film’s course but also forced changes in its cast, Vinod Khanna was moved to a supporting role while Danny Denzongpa lost his part altogether.

For Rakesh Kumar who was a close friend of Vinod Khanna, this was an emotionally difficult situation. He delayed telling Vinod for two days, fearing that it might cost him both the project and his bond with the actor. But when he finally explained the circumstances with immense hesitation, Vinod Khanna showed remarkable understanding. He accepted the supporting role without resentment, proving his generosity and professionalism.

What made this adjustment even more unusual was that Vinod Khanna was paid the same fee as Amitabh Bachchan, despite no longer being the film’s central hero. Released in 1977, Khoon Pasina became a major success, cementing Amitabh Bachchan’s dominance as a superstar of that era while also highlighting Vinod Khanna’s enduring dignity.

The film’s popularity extended beyond Hindi cinema. It was remade in Telugu as Tiger with N. T. Rama Rao in the lead and in Tamil as Siva, where Rajinikanth played a key role.
