Long before Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna became one of the most admired couples of Bollywood, Twinkle was apparently so smitten with the actor that it even affected her concentration on a film set.
The amusing revelation resurfaced from a conversation during the launch of Twinkle Khanna’s book Mrs. Funnybones in 2015. During the discussion, filmmaker Karan Johar asked Aamir Khan about his experience of working with Twinkle and whether he considered her a good actress.
Before Aamir could respond, Twinkle shared a funny memory from the sets of the 2000 film Mela, where the two had worked together. According to her, there was a time when she was distracted during filming because she kept thinking about Akshay Kumar, whom she was dating at the time. Twinkle recalled that Aamir was surprised by her lack of focus and reacted strongly after learning the reason behind it. While she jokingly suggested that he was close to losing his temper, Aamir did not remember the incident in quite the same way.
The light-hearted exchange soon turned into a series of humorous stories about each other. Aamir Khan praised Twinkle Khanna’s intelligence and wit, saying she possessed a sharp mind, a strong sense of humour and a keen understanding of people and relationships. At the same time, he jokingly remarked that she had a talent for teasing and making fun of her friends and insulting them, including him.
Twinkle Khanna then shared another memorable moment from the filming of Mela. She recalled seeing Aamir Khan upset after one of his creative suggestions was reportedly not accepted during a discussion about a scene. According to her, the actor, known for taking his work very seriously, was emotionally affected by the situation. She remembered finding him sitting alone behind a large rock, visibly disappointed and almost crying. As expected, Aamir Khan laughed off the story and playfully questioned why she was bringing it up again.
Twinkle Khanna eventually stepped away from acting in 2001 and built a successful career as an author and columnist. Meanwhile, both Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan went on to become two of the biggest stars in Indian cinema.
