The much-awaited sequel to the 2006 comedy Malamaal Weekly is taking a new direction, with some major changes in its creative team. Original director Priyadarshan and lead actor Riteish Deshmukh are reportedly not returning for Malamaal Weekly 2, according to a leading magazine.
While Priyadarshan has confirmed his exit, filmmaker Amit Joshi has reportedly been brought on board to direct the upcoming film. The sequel is expected to feature a fresh cast and a new storyline while keeping the small-town comedy setting of the original.

Priyadarshan Confirms He Won’t Direct the Sequel
Priyadarshan, who wrote and directed the original Malamaal Weekly, has confirmed that he will not be associated with the second installment. Speaking to a leading magazine, the filmmaker made it clear that he has decided against working on sequels and has no plans to return to the comedy franchise. His decision means that Malamaal Weekly 2 will move forward under a different creative team.
Riteish Deshmukh Also Reportedly Exits
Riteish Deshmukh, who played one of the lead roles in the 2006 film, is also reportedly not part of the sequel. The makers are now preparing to introduce a completely new cast. According to a source close to the project, the casting process has already been completed and an official announcement is expected soon. This means audiences could see an entirely different set of actors bringing the comedy franchise back to the big screen.

Who Will Direct Malamaal Weekly 2?
Filmmaker Amit Joshi has reportedly been selected to direct the sequel. He previously co-directed Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which starred Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
The upcoming film is expected to retain the small-town backdrop that played an important role in the original movie. Like its predecessor, the sequel will reportedly revolve around money, temptation and misunderstandings, with a fresh storyline designed to appeal to audiences.
What Was the Original Malamaal Weekly About?

Released in 2006, Malamaal Weekly featured a popular ensemble cast, including Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Arbaaz Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani. Written and directed by Priyadarshan, the film followed the lives of villagers after one of them discovered a winning lottery ticket. The unexpected discovery created chaos, greed and a series of hilarious misunderstandings among the residents. Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, it connected with audiences and went on to become a commercial success.
Malamaal Weekly Was Based on a British Comedy
The original film was based on the 1998 British comedy Waking Ned. Its story also inspired adaptations in several Indian languages, including the Telugu film Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw (2006), the Kannada film Dakota Picture (2012) and the Malayalam film Aamayum Muyalum (2014). Interestingly, Aamayum Muyalum was also directed by Priyadarshan.

Elvish Yadav’s Name Also Linked to the Sequel
Earlier reports suggested that YouTuber and reality television personality Elvish Yadav has joined the cast of Malamaal Weekly 2. In August, Elvish shared a heartfelt message thanking his fans for supporting his film journey. He described himself as an outsider in Bollywood, saying he had no connections in the industry and that the love of his fans had helped him move forward in films.
With a new director, a fresh cast and reported changes behind the scenes, Malamaal Weekly 2 is shaping up to be quite different from the original. However, fans will have to wait for the makers to officially announce the cast and further details about the film.
